HIEF - Angelus Estate Summer Show
------------
Melissa was nervous - and that was a rare word in her vocabulary. It had been years and years since Sisi was formally shown, let along in the cross-country ring. Sisi has never been an easy mare to deal with. She was strong and fiercely independent. She would often be on her best behaviour in the dressage ring and sometimes even in the show jumping ring but cross-country was a different story. This mare loved to run - she was a thoroughbred after all from a racing background. Cross-country was her element and she literally took the reins when they were on course.
Melissa did a lot of warm-up that morning. She was up 2 hours before the event started moving Sisi through intricate flatwork patterns, jumping her over combinations. She tried everything in her power to tire her out. People looked at her like she was mental when she walked up to the start gate with a huffing, sweaty mare. They were already sure they had her beat. But Melissa was still nervous. She trotted Sisi around in a circle for a few more minutes while she waited her turn on the course. When that time came, she trotted to the gate and got ready.
"Here goes nothing" she whispered to herself. With barely a touch of her leg Sisi launched forward. Melissa was sure she heard some of the other riders gasp when they saw Sisi - the sweaty, had-been-worked-for-2-hours-already- mare take off with such enthusiasm. Melissa wasn't nervous anymore. She was downright terrified now. Sisi leaped and soared over the jumps while Melissa held on for dear life.
